Summer is here!

I am finally starting to enjoy my summer. I've hit a bump or two, but the road to happiness and some relaxation is under my feet. I plan to have lots of company and spend time visiting with family and friends. Some are nearby and some will involve travel. Life is good. Happy summer to all!

Interactive sites for math and science

It is important to align technology standards with curriculum standards because we are responsible for both.
We can hold them accountable through worksheets, quizzes, exit slips and observations.
My main concerns are that my Smartboard and other technology often don't work. I also don't want to be liable for poor use of the Internet by some students.

I already use the FOSS website on a regular basis with my kits-
http://www.fossweb.com/

I can use this with life and earth science.

Motion and Design Photostory

I would use this video clip so that my current students can get an idea of what their projects/activities for collaborative work should look like.

Physics Assignment voki

Physics Cartoons
I plan to use this as a summative assessment in the physics section of science. Students will work in groups and be scored by a rubric.

Your assignment will be graded  using the rubric below:

          CATEGORY
          4
          3
          2
          1
          Graphics/Pictures
Graphics/scenes go well with the text and there is a good mix of text and graphics/acting.
Graphics/scenes go well with the text, but there are so many that they distract from the text.
Graphic/scenes go well with the text, but there are too few and the work seems \"text-heavy\".
Graphics/scenes do not go with the accompanying text or appear to be randomly chosen.
          Content - Accuracy
          All facts are accurate.
99-90% of the facts are accurate.
89-80% of the facts are accurate.
Fewer than 80% of the facts are accurate.

          3. Research and Information Fluency

Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.

          4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making

Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

          5. Digital Citizenship

Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.

Using interesting tools from 2.0- Communication

                  Wordle: math science

I hope to entice students and their families to check my webpage for information and links on a regular basis.

                  C. Beckham

I learned to make an avatar today.
I learned many uses for search engines.
I learned to wait for directions from Karen.

                  Whales/Oceans

I can use this video when I teach life science, specifically conservation. We study various animals, plants, etc. The biomes are taught and biotic and abiotic factors are identified.

The video on ocean floors would be used in my landforms and oceans unit. This covers almost all the standards for the ocean. In addition the video on currents helps students to visualize the movement.

                  http://www.onr.navy.mil/focus/ocean/regions/oceanfloor1.htm
                  http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/oceanography_currents_1.html

                  Motion and Design

I created a unit using Google Earth. It is on motion and design and includes information and videos of the 1954 Daytona 500, the worst crash ever at that speedway and Newton's Laws. The kids will love it.

                  Grand Canyon

This is the Grand Canyon. We will be studying it in our Landforms science unit. How was it formed? How deep is it? What are the other landforms that we need to be able to identify for our unit?

                  new post

I think the kids would have lots of fun using the avatar. I'm not sure of educational uses.

                  Day 3 Web 2.0

I think emodo would be very useful when students are learning math or science. Peer tutoring and teacher support would be useful in both area.

I would also use blogs to collaborate with other teachers and another blog for students. I also signed up for 2.0 and registered a name and received a password. I will play with that tonight to see how I may want to use.

                  Math videos

I could use http://www.khanacademy.org/ to give individual or class lessons for students. I could use the igoogle blog to determine ares where students still felt they needed help. Perhaps a poll of how comfortable they were (1 -10) to assist in there comfort levels.

                  Tonight

I got home and relaxed a bit. I have become a follower of another couple of blogs. I feel a little better about my day. My two Yorkies are soothing my pain.

                  Day 2- Forms

I really thought I was going to lose it today. First the computer and Internet had issues, then I got an attitude. This meant I could not think straight. However, I did contribute to a class Google document and then a form. I embedded the form in my blog and explained possible uses. I created an iGoogle page with about 50 widgets. Then, I added Google Reader as number 51. This will help me more on a personal level than professional at this point. Perhaps if I master my attitude and computer, I will attmpt professional use of these apps.

                  Day 2- Forms

                  1. I would use forms to survey students' interests. I could also use it to determine whether they understood the focus question of the day. I could ask them to explain their answers as they responded.

                  2. I would use Google Documents to plan with my team. This would cut down on meeting time and would allow us to "meet" from the comfort of our homes. This would be helpful in working smarter, not harder.

                  C. Beckham Web 2.0

I learned to make an avatar, more uses for search engines and to wait on Karen's directions.
